St. Cyprian’s 31st Scout Group was first chartered in September, 1952, with St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church as our Sponsor. At that time, the Church and the Scouting sections (Cubs and Scouts) were meeting in a small wooden frame building located near the alley between 19th and 20th Ave., and 15th St. NW, now home of the Royal Canadian Legion(Head Office).

In 1961, Nora Ward, a Girl Guide Leader in the Calgary N.W., saw a school that was available, and contacted the Calgary School Board for details. Nora, Bruce Compton and Cliff Gundry-White made an appointment with what is now called the Calgary Board of Education to discuss the possibility of obtaining the old Capitol Hill Cottage School for the 31st Scout Group, since it was obvious with our numbers we could not be accommodated in the new church building on 19th Street. We were successful in obtaining the use of the school for $1.00 per year. Renovations over the next 5-10 years brought it to the basic state it is now.

The Hall, as it was fondly called, became renamed "Nelson Hall" in the late 1990’s in memory of Don Nelson, Chairman and long-time member of the 31st.

Scouter's Cliff Gundry-White and Jim MacDonald stand beside the St Cyprian's banner, located inside the chapel of Holy Cross Anglican Church, previously named St. Cyprians Anglican Church, due in part to a merger with other Anglican parishes. The 31St. Scout Group, with agreement of our sponsor, has chose to maintain the original church name "St. Cyprian's" as our Scout Group Name. The 31st Scout Group does this to preserve the groups heritage and history, in association with the World Scouting movement.
